STATEMENT Elisa Alvarado
Artist’s Statement www.elisaalvarado.com info@elisaalvarado.com My paintings and sculptures are story snap shots depicting expressions of the human psyche and experience. I take inspiration for my pieces from all aspects of life, including: dreams, music, literature, spirituality, psychology, and the human condition. All of my paintings have a distinct narrative quality. The animals within the paintings are like characters in a play drawn from a stream of consciousness. The layered images are symbolic of our own life experiences layered over time. I represent the human state by juxtaposing the animals into scenes of everyday human life. Furniture, rooms, and machinery become the environments for the animal dramas that represent us as the creatures mingle in their human realm. I usually paint on raw canvas in order to enhance the texture and gain the speckled drawn in chalk quality that is characteristic of my current body of work. I never begin a piece with a preconceived notion how it will turn out; instead, I let each piece evolve into its own expression. I want the layered images and diversity of creatures to allow the viewer to become a part of the narrative as they bring their own life experiences into the interpretation of the piece. |
